چکیده

The article covers the two most important architectures for providing Quality of Service at the network and transport layer, the Integrated Services (IntServ) and the Differentiated Services (DiffServ) architecture, both proposed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). It describes the basic characteristics of each architecture, provides a comparison between them and outlines the current trend and the status of the implementations in network equipment and networks. INTRODUCTION IP networks are built around the idea of best effort networking, which makes no guarantees regarding the delivery, the speed and the accuracy of the transmitted data. While this model is suitable for a large number of applications and works well for almost all applications when the network load is low (and therefore there is no congestion), there are two main factors that lead to the need for an additional capability of quality of service guarantees. One is the fact that an increasing number of Internet applications are related to real-time and other multimedia data, which have greater service requirements in order to be satisfying to the user. The other is that Internet usage is steadily increasing, and although the network infrastructure is often also updated, it is not always certain that network resources offering will be ahead of network usage demand. In order to deal with this situation, IETF has developed two architectures in order to enable QoS based handling of data flows in IP networks. This article describes and compares these two architectures.

Adding Security to Quality of Service Architectures

In a Quality of Service (QoS) aware communication system, a user is able to choose between various service classes, each with different reliability, predictability, and efficiency degrees. However, until now security has not been recognized as a parameter in QoS architectures and no security-related service classes have been defined. This implies that end-users have no chance of configuring the...

A Quality Evaluation Framework For Web Service Architectures

A conceptual framework for evaluating the quality of software architectures for Web Services, using an enhanced linguistics-based approach for categorization of quality attributes, is presented. The framework is applied to the evaluation of three common architectures for Web Services, which are then compared to the well known CORBA middleware architecture. The results presented lay the foundati...

A Review of QoS Architectures

Over the past several years there has been a considerable amount of research within the field of quality of service (QoS) support for distributed multimedia systems. To date, most of the work has occurred within the context of individual architectural layers such as the distributed system platform, operating system, transport subsystem and network. Much less progress has been made in addressing...

An ontology for quality-aware service discovery

The fast emergence and acceptance of service oriented architectures leads to fast development of extensional technologies like service delivery, discovery and composition. As main effort is being spent on automatic discovery and composition, current solutions do not reflect real world scenarios sufficiently. Services are offered by different vendors with different quality levels and prices. Lar...

Segmented Adaptation of Traac Aggregates

Congestion control in heterogeneous Quality-of-Service (QoS) architectures remains a major challenge. The solution proposed in this paper entails three constituents. Taking the current trend towards Differentiated Services (DiiServ) as a likely candidate for future Internet QoS-architectures, the three constituent parts of this approach are based on aggregated congestion control, domain-based c...

Fairness as a QoS Measure for Web Services

Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs) are component-based architectures, characterized by reusability, modularization and composition, usually offered by HTTP (web services) and often equipped with a Quality of Services (QoS) measure. In order to guarantee the fairness property to each client requesting a service, we propose a fair version of the (Soft) Concurrent Constraint language to deal wi...
